When Kristin Pietrowicz jumped from the balcony of her blazing Carrboro apartment a little more than a month ago, she clutched her Persian cat, Phoebe.
Then, as she fell, she lost her 7-pound gray companion with the pushed-in face.
With her heels shattered, Pietrowicz, 25, couldn’t search the woods behind her destroyed building in the days after the fire. The blaze killed a downstairs neighbor and displaced about 20 residents.
But Lynn Turner, an assistant librarian in the Geological Sciences Library at UNC-Chapel Hill, returned night after night, setting traps and walking the woods with a flashlight until she found Phoebe.
