Grandma's Chair

After grandma died I put her chair in the basement. It's not a normal basement but a full height storage space created from the slope of our lot. The 10-foot by 10-foot concrete pad gives way to the dirt under the rest of the house.

Even though there is a window, the basement is always dark. The window is somewhat clouded over. When I open the door during the daytime, the light rushes in, filling the space with daylight. In that first moment as the light almost has a physical presence, I'm sure I see grandma sitting in her chair. As I look more directly in that direction she is gone.

This only happens during the day. But I avoid the basement at night.
