When I lived in NYC I drank coffee every morning. I no longer drink coffee. New York coffee culture back then was nothing like Starbucks or high-end coffee of today. Coffee was coffee and it was made from beans. Nobody cared about the beans or how they were roasted. And regular coffee came with milk and sugar.
I drank my coffee black. And I usually got it from street coffee cart or from a deli. If I just said black coffee, sometimes it came with milk and sugar. Either black had no meaning to the person making my coffee, they didn’t hear me, or they didn’t understand me. I started ordering my coffee as: black coffee, no milk, no sugar. That usually got me coffee that way I wanted it.
